Our Favourites from The Met Gala 2022

The Met Gala has come and gone and the looks that lived up to the days when the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art were art in itself have been rare. However, Evan Mock, Black Lively, Billie Eilish, Amber Valletta, Precious Lee and Cynthia Erivo saved this night so special for the Hollywood elite.

GILDED GLAMOUR: An Anthology of Fashion

For the curious who have not yet realized the true meaning behind the theme of this year's Met Gala, let's try to explain it as easily as possible.

Gilded Glamour is the so-called charm and charisma of wealth and it dates back to the 19th and 20th centuries, when the United States of America faced monumental economic growth.

This year's Met Gala theme is then a continuation of the theme chosen for 2021 and features undeniable political influences. Like everything else in the world of celebrities, themed parties and its adjacent fashion constantly presents political or revolutionary motives, although sometimes that is not the goal. What was once just a celebration of art is today a timeless phenomenon that dictates the fashion of the following years and opinions about the personalities who attend.

The big problem with the theme chosen for the Met Gala 2022 is its futility and perpetuation of the elitism of Fashion, Etiquette, Culture and Art. In a country that proclaims freedom and innovation, why have we continued to celebrate years of precariousness and denial of rights for the working class?

Gilded Glamour represents the American and European elites who dictated the dream of the society of the time: wealth, influence and sophistication. And aren't celebrities the elites of today? The theme, for some, can then be interpreted as mocking the audience of these celebrities. As if, in fact, the years of the power of the privileged classes had never really come to an end. They simply went through a metamorphosis of their way of presenting themselves and the response of their collective. Aren't we today the class exploited by celebrities and elites?

Seja como for e seja qual for a verdadeira razão da escolha do tema, os looks estiveram um pouco abaixo das expectativas. Provavelmente porque estávamos à espera de uma reinvenção do traje operário pelas celebridades democratas ou talvez porque, apesar da superficialidade da interpretação literal da temática, adivinhávamos visuais exuberantes e corpetes minúsculos. Apesar de algumas figuras públicas não terem decepcionado, recebemos maioritariamente um reboot dos anos passados.

Apesar de, em geral, termos ficado um pouco desapontados com o resultado de uma das noites mais glamorosas em Manhattan, houveram looks que não conseguimos esquecer e que agora se juntam ao nosso repertório de momentos icónicos na Moda Contemporânea.

Whatever the real reason for choosing Gilded Glamour as this year's theme, the looks were slightly below expectations. Probably because we were expecting a reinvention of the typical worker costume by democratic celebrities or perhaps because, despite the superficiality of the literal interpretation of the theme, we guessed lush visuals and tiny bodices.

Although some public figures have not disappointed, we have mostly received a reboot from past years. In general, we were a little disappointed with the result of one of the most glamorous nights in Manhattan. However, there were looks that we could not forget and that now join our repertoire of iconic moments in Contemporary Fashion.

Alicia Keys gives us an unique interpretation of the theme: a celebration of New York City as the economic and cultural center of the United States of America. In her words, "NEW YORK FOREVER."!

Cynthia Erivo marked the Met Gala 2022 with one of those looks that only those who understand its meaning will give it due value. Through the use of pieces from the charming Louis Vuitton archive, the goal was to have "different textures and fabrics", a typical feature of nineteenth century fashion. The headscarf was the golden key to what was a look inspired by louisiana's working-class black women. The past need to hide their hair leads today to what is a Contemporary Haute Couture.

And we end with our favorite of the night. The color, bodice and screaming meaning made the Met Gala 2022 worth a little more. Evan Mock is not only a pretty face and an amazing actor, he is now also an icon of contemporary menswear. In the Look of the Met Evan gave us layers of interpretation and much to think about freedom of expression in men's fashion.

Instead of choosing a typical suit or tuxedo, Evan created a bridge between historical art and the possibility of tomorrow's innovation.
